Easy training for runners and triathletes is often overlooked, but it’s one of the most powerful tools you have to improve your performance. Too often, athletes assume that only hard workouts drive progress, but slowing down when it’s required is what gets you stronger, faster, and more consistent over time.
Think of easy training as the quiet hero of your plan. Hard workouts may feel like the spotlight performances, and in some ways they are, but easy training and the easy recoveries in between the hard intervals, are the what make the big show possible. Without them, your body can’t adapt, repair, and grow. Without them, progress stalls.
Easy sessions and recovery periods are not wasted time. They are the foundation beneath the skyscraper. Physiologically, easy workouts build your aerobic engine, strengthen your heart, and train your body to use energy more efficiently. Mentally, thy give you space to recharge and rediscover the joy in training. And strategically, they balance out the stress of harder sessions so you can stay healthy and consistent.

Easy training plays many parts in your training:
- Recovery weeks have a reduced volume of training from the previous two to three weeks of training. Not all workouts are easy during a recovery week unless it’s recovery after a big race.
- Easy/recovery workouts are easy workouts meant to be an active recovery between your other workouts.
- Recovery intervals are very easy periods in between hard efforts within a workout. They can either be an easy jog or spin or a complete rest, depending on what the workout calls for.
The key to remember is that easy really does mean easy. Sometimes t’s an entire workout that should be easy, such as an easy ride on an active recovery day. Sometimes it’s the easy recovery jogs between intervals. If you finish a run or ride on a day that you have an easy workout scheduled and feel like you could keep going, then you’re doing it right. Training isn’t about going hard every day. It’s about balancing stress and recovery so that you arrive at the start line line fit, fresh, and ready to race.
So the next time you head out for an easy workout, don’t second guess it. Don’t rush it. Don’t turn it into something it’s not. Easy training isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s the weapon that helps you get stronger, faster, and more resilient.
